Application of Genomic and Metagenomics To Inform Fungal Biology

Dr. Jason Stajich
Professor
Department of Microbiology and Plant Pathology
University of California – Riverside

Dr. Stajich will present examples of how we use genomic sequencing to study microbes that persist as infections, understand how fungi have evolved and are related to each other, and how we are exploring the biology of extremophile microbes from Antarctica to the Mojave Desert.

Abstract:
Advances in genomic technologies have enabled low cost access to complete genomes of thousands of organisms and have greatly advanced the study of Fungi. This includes improving the resolution of the evolutionary relationships among Fungi, studying population biology, and understanding pathogenic and mutualistic interactions with other microbes, plants, and animals. I will present examples of how we use genomic sequencing to study microbes that persist as infections, understand how fungi have evolved and are related to each other, and how we are exploring the biology of extremophile microbes from Antarctica to the Mojave Desert.

Speaker Bio:
Jason Stajich is a Professor of Bioinformatics in the Department of Microbiology and Plant Pathology at UC Riverside. His research focuses on the evolution of fungi and their interactions with other organisms from bacteria to other fungi to plants and animals. Using genomics and computational tools his lab examines the evolution and function of gene families and uses phylogenomics approaches to reconstruct the evolutionary history of fungi. The lab also applies metabarcoding and metagenomics to study the structure of fungal and bacteria communities with a focus on soils and rocks in arid environments.
