Frank Ritter Ice Arena

Frank Ritter Ice Arena is the former home to the Rochester Institute of Technology men’s and women’s hockey teams. This historic building in RIT’s rich heritage has hosted five NCAA Championships, most recently the women’s Division III final in 2010-11. The arena is named after one of Rochester’s most distinguished citizens. Frank Ritter was a founder of Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute (now RIT). He served on the Board of Trustees from 1885 to 1903, and was founder of Ritter Company, later a part of Sybron Co. The arena was dedicated in his honor in 1968.

Ritter Ice Arena has an intimate capacity of 2,100 (1,600 sitting, 500 standing). Formerly known as Shumway Arena, the facility has undergone several renovations throughout the last few years. A new sound system, lights, ceiling, a full service press box and dasher boards have been added, as well both team locker room renovations and additions. Skylight wells on the roof were also added to provide natural light to the locker rooms and the main lobby.

Frank Ritter Ice Arena most recently provided temporary space to the Wallace Library during construction.
