RIT opened the doors to its world-class home for cybersecurity in 2020, and it’s making the university one of the best places for cybersecurity education, training, and research.

RIT and Alstom are coming together to help advance cybersecurity education, development, and research in the transportation industry. Through a new collaboration, the French mobility technology company will provide RIT students with educational, research, and career opportunities. Alstom has also been named theme-sponsor for RIT’s next Global Collegiate Penetration Testing Competition (CPTC) in 2023-2024.

The best white hat cybersecurity students will work to phish and exploit their way to a championship trophy at the Collegiate Penetration Testing Competition (CPTC) global finals Jan. 13–15. The event is the culmination of the world’s largest offense-based collegiate cybersecurity competition, hosted by RIT.

A team of researchers from RIT was recently awarded a grant to develop curricular modules on infrastructure improvement and resilience that introduce students to public and private sector standards, including industry standards.

RIT cybersecurity experts are helping make instant messaging safer for activists in countries controlled by restrictive regimes. Pentesters from RIT’s ESL Global Cybersecurity Institute performed a security assessment of Partisan Telegram, a customized version of the Telegram messaging app. RIT was selected to conduct the assessment by a nonprofit organization that supports global internet freedom.

Professor S. Jay Yang sees collaboration as the key to combating international cybersecurity threats. That’s why the director of global outreach for RIT’s ESL Global Cybersecurity Institute is helping lead an alliance of cybersecurity researchers from the U.S., Northern Ireland, and the Republic of Ireland.

Security Risk Advisors, a cybersecurity consulting firm, is sponsoring $125,000 in scholarships for RIT students interested in “red team” cybersecurity, also known as offensive security. Security Risk Advisors has committed to annually sponsoring $25,000 in scholarships for the next five years.

More than 30 employers returned to the RIT/NTID campus since the start of the pandemic to recruit a new cohort of talented deaf and hard-of-hearing students and alumni for open co-op or full-time positions.

Yidan Hu and Ivan De Oliveira Nunes have each won Meta Research Awards for their cutting-edge cybersecurity research. The assistant professors of computing security are working to protect people’s safety on their augmented reality and smart devices.

RIT’s bachelor’s degree in computing security ranks No. 16 by Best Accredited Colleges.

RIT has been recognized by Gizmodo, a design, technology, science, and science fiction website, for its offerings related to the top Degrees of the Future for 2022. RIT was named for its specialties in cybersecurity, environmental engineering, game design, and computer graphics.

Explore, discover, and get involved were some of the suggestions the newest RIT students received during Thursday’s New Student Convocation, which included welcomes from administrators, their new Student Government president, and even some levity featuring RIT President David Munson who pretended he needed to finish his college education.
