RIT Physics Grad Finds his Focus in Precision Optics
From RIT physics labs to precision optics, Joey Root ’25 is using skills developed through coursework and research as he builds a career in optical manufacturing at Optimax Systems.
For Joey Root ’25, studying physics at RIT provided more than a degree. It gave him the skills he now uses in precision optics.
After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in physics, Joey joined Optimax Systems, Inc. as an optical manufacturing technician. He helps produce precision optical components by reading and interpreting blueprints, grinding and polishing parts, working with computer numerical control (CNC) and non-CNC equipment, and operating interferometers to ensure components meet specifications. His coursework and research experiences helped prepare him for the technical, hands-on demands of his role. “A lot of my previous experience with interferometers came from the lab courses at RIT, which was super helpful going into my career,” he said.
Joey was drawn to RIT by the opportunity to explore observational and computational astrophysics. With plans to eventually pursue graduate study, he chose physics and gained valuable hands-on experience working with faculty researchers.
One of the most influential parts of his experience was conducting research with Dr. Jeyhan Kartaltepe. The opportunity strengthened his collaboration skills and introduced him to programs and software common in scientific and technical fields, giving him valuable experience to bring to prospective employers. “Getting involved in research helped me develop teamwork skills in ways I wouldn’t have experienced otherwise,” he said. For current College of Science students interested in a similar career path, Joey recommends getting involved early and making the most of what RIT has to offer.
“Look for opportunities as soon as you arrive on campus,” he said. “Pursue research with a faculty advisor, explore co-op opportunities with companies around Rochester or through the Career Fair, and make sure to take a little time to have some fun!”
Looking back, Joey credits the College of Science community with encouraging students to explore their interests and get involved. “Everyone is super supportive of each other, and there are many opportunities for outreach events, extracurricular research, and co-ops that I encourage students to pursue,” he said.
As science and technology continue to evolve, Joey believes students have opportunities to make a meaningful impact on the people and environments around them. Reflecting on his own experience, he describes the College of Science as home to “some of the best minds anywhere in the world.”
