MFA student lends 3D printing knowledge to IPI research project

Xinxin Li ’24 MFA (industrial design) is working with RIT’s Image Permanence Institute (IPI) as a 3D design assistant on a research project funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

Under the supervision of Meredith Noyes, research scientist for IPI, Li is contributing her wealth of experience in CAD modeling, rendering, and 3D printing to the ongoing project titled “Foundational Research to Inform Preservation Guidelines for the Creation, Collection, and Consumption of 3D Printed Objects in Museums.”

Li will play a crucial role in the design and printing of a research collection of 3D-printed objects. The research collection created will be used for material studies and enhance IPI’s understanding of the diversity of 3D-printed materials and processes found in collecting institutions.

"I am always passionate about discovering new knowledge,” Li said. “During this project, I have the opportunity to research 3D printing, material studies in the printing filament consideration, and design in building up good printing parts. Working at IPI is an excellent learning process during my study path, and I look forward to seeing the outcomes of working with my team at IPI."
