RIT Photojournalism capstone exhibition coming to RIT City Art Space

“The Heart, Not The Eye” is a collaborative exhibition that will feature capstone work from 10 senior Photojournalism students at Rochester Institute of Technology. It will be on display at RIT City Art Space from Feb. 24 to March 12.

A meet and greet with the artists is scheduled for 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 25, prior to the official opening from 6-9 p.m. RIT City Art Space attendees are required to wear a mask.

An artists’ talk will also take place at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 1, on Zoom. Registration is required. 

Photographer and activist Gordon Parks once said, “I feel it is the heart, not the eye, that should determine the content of the photograph. What the eye sees is its own. What the heart can perceive is a very different matter.”

“The Heart, Not The Eye” exhibition was inspired by this quote and is a representation of how student approached their stories. The pieces featured are the pinnacle of the students’ year-long journey to complete projects that are judged in accordance with the highest standards in photojournalism.

In “The Heart, Not The Eye,” the 10 graduating students display the importance of journalism to both educate and speak on the current social issues of our world while creatively adapting to changes during the COVID-19 pandemic. The stories share common themes of community, family, healing, preservation, racial inequalities and love. The work is expressed through a variety of mediums, primarily through photographic and video storytelling, with the inclusion of design and written journalism.

The exhibiting visual artists are: Emma Bachman, Dylan Baker, Ben Braun, Silka Houghton, Justice Marbury, Rachel Pryke, Genae Shields, Diana Spencer, Marili Vaca and Jesse Wolfe.

RIT City Art Space is located at 280 East Main St., Sibley Tower, first floor, in downtown Rochester, N.Y. 14604. It is open to the public from 1-5 p.m. Thursday through Sunday with extended hours on Fridays (1-9 p.m.).
