Students, alumna take part in premier photo workshop

A trio of Rochester Institute of Technology School of Photographic Arts and Sciences students and alumni were among an exclusive group to participate in an eminent workshop earlier this month.

Based on the merit of their portfolios, photojournalism students Boris Shirman and Traci Westcott and Maridelis Morales Rosado ’18 (advertising photography) were chosen for the annual Eddie Adams Workshop. They spent Oct. 5-8 in Jeffersonville, N.Y., working with leading photographers and editors as they took on intensive assignments, received portfolio reviews and engaged in discussion.

Rosado, Shirman and Westcott were three of only 100 students and young professionals worldwide selected for the four-day opportunity. Their involvement continued a trend of RIT students and recent graduates regularly being picked to attend the Eddie Adams Workshop, which wrapped up its 31st year.

Westcott shared her experience:

“The energy at EAW is absolutely amazing,” she said. “Everyone is filled with inspiration, positivity and knowledge. Hearing stories of resiliency and persistence in the field uncovered how passion and doing what you love allows you to work through tough times.

“I’m not sure I would have even known about the workshop without RIT,” Westcott added. “Our program and advisors always encourage us to apply for everything, even if we don’t think we will get in. RIT has allowed me to experience photography on a much deeper level than I would have imagined before going to school.”

Below is a sample of the work Westcott produced during various workshop assignments:
