A multidisciplinary team of first-year students has been working to develop an imaging system that can reveal information hidden in historical documents for their Innovative Freshmen Experience project-based course. But with the shift to remote classes, the students left campus with the device nearly complete. Although disappointed, they shifted focus to the opportunities the new situation would create.

RIT Archives is documenting the COVID-19 moment and its impact on the RIT community by collecting personal reflections of the pandemic. The “RIT Pandemic Journals” is meant to be a repository for RIT students, faculty, staff and alumni who are processing their response to the crisis in creative ways.

During this time of COVID-19, the Wellness division of RIT Student Affairs remains a resource for undergraduate and graduate students seeking health care, mental health counseling, nutrition advice or guidance for navigating personal matters. While the delivery process looks different than before the pandemic, the level of care is the same.

RIT is leading an effort involving local companies and healthcare experts to produce a prototype ventilator designed to help meet the continuing surge of respiratory cases as a result of the coronavirus.

Many RIT faculty, students, staff and alumni are among the collaborations here and across the nation, providing expertise to improve or create much-needed equipment and protective gear for medical personnel fighting the Coronavirus.

Karen Braun had a clear picture of what she wanted to do with her life at a young age. As Braun grew up, she developed a wide variety of interests including photography, psychology, and physics. She ultimately found a new cross-disciplinary Ph.D. program in imaging science at RIT that let her pursue those interests all at once.

Disability is an identity, not a deficit. That’s the message Catherine Lewis, director of RIT’s Disability Services Office, hopes people will remember.

Michelle Magee ’05 MS, senior associate director for Employment Engagement in the Office of Career Services and Cooperative Education; Hamad Ghazle ’88, director of the diagnostic medical sonography program; Kerry Hughes ’03 MS, project and events manager for the Office of the Provost; and David Long ’16 Ph.D., director of RIT MAGIC Center, and were honored with the Golden Brick Award for going above and beyond their duties to volunteer or serve in leadership roles at RIT.

Faculty and staff members at RIT are encouraged to volunteer with Rochester Global Connections, which pairs community members with international students to help them feel more welcome. There are 30 RIT international students currently in the program, but another seven are waiting for a pairing.
