The 14th cohort of the Destler/Johnson Rochester City Scholars were welcomed at a ceremony on Aug. 28 held at Liberty Hill. The scholars program provides scholarships and academic support to graduates from the Rochester City School District and approved charter schools.

A commemoration to rename an RIT residence hall after a granddaughter of abolitionist Frederick Douglass will be held Thursday evening in conjunction with RIT’s annual Lighting the Way ceremony to welcome women and non-binary students to campus.

The Student Hall for Exploration and Development (SHED) welcomed students, faculty, and staff into its teaching and learning spaces on Aug. 28. The SHED includes five new active learning classrooms alongside the newly renovated Wallace Library with its 22 new classrooms.

It’s going to be a great semester and what better way to enjoy the RIT journey than with a new campus facility that will inspire innovation, creativity, collaboration, expression, and performance. The new facility is now ready to welcome students, faculty, and staff into its teaching and learning spaces. Other parts of the SHED (Student Hall for Exploration and Development) require further finishing work with a goal of completion around mid-semester.

First came COVID-19, then came a massive construction project, and now after more than three-and-half years, RIT’s university library reopens with a new look and a new neighbor.

Thousands of RIT’s first-year students participated in the seventh Hunger Project on Aug. 25 in Ritter Arena. Students packaged more than 115,000 meals for the Rochester community that will be distributed through FoodLink.

In what has become a late summer tradition, President David Munson and his wife, Nancy, have returned to the screen with their latest “welcome back” video, this time tasked by a mysterious stranger to search the RIT campus and retrieve the legendary source of its creativity.

Nearly one in six of the more than 3,300 first-year and transfer undergraduates this year received a Performing Arts Scholarship from RIT. That brings the total number of scholars to more than 1,800 in the five years since the program began. The program encourages high school students involved in performing arts to continue their passions at RIT.

Saunders College of Business is entering its first cohort of students into the college’s new Ph.D. in business administration this fall, marking the university’s inaugural social sciences doctoral program. The program is designed to inspire and train scholars to identify, investigate, and solve unique business challenges that influence business and society.

RIT once again made The Princeton Review Best Colleges list. Recognized for its value and career options for its students, the Best 389 Colleges 2024 edition, newly published this month, ranks the university in two Top 50 categories—No. 3 in the undergraduate game design programs and No. 44 in Green Colleges.
