Having a busy school schedule can be quite draining, and sometimes you just need to unwind. RIT offers so much more beyond the classroom hours. Whether you’re a music lover, a sports enthusiast, or you’re looking for something new to try, you can always find something to do on campus.
The SHED Individual Practice Rooms
If you’re like me and love to sing or play an instrument, but you have roommates and nowhere to have a jam session, then the individual practice rooms are the perfect place. Being a business student doesn’t stop me from using the rooms, as there are open hours available for all majors. Just bring your student ID and jam your heart out in your own private space at the SHED.
Athletic Facilities
Tennis Courts
Trying something new can lead you to new hobbies or an unrealized talent. I’ve always wanted to try tennis and envisioned myself playing, but never had the chance. At RIT, I was able to step outside my comfort zone and join a tennis wellness course. I instantly fell in love with the sport. In my spare time, I can grab a racket from the Gordon Field House and have a fun match with my friends at the tennis courts on campus. All you need is your student ID and a friend to play with. If you really enjoy playing and want to meet new people, joining the tennis club can be a great option. If you're feeling competitive, participate in intramurals too!
Gordon Field House and Activities Center and Hale-Andrews Student Life Center (SLC)
Even if you’re not part of collegiate sports, there is so much to do at The Gordon Field House and Activities Center and SLC. Most sports you can think of have their own facilities. Whether you want to take a swim, hit the gym, or shoot some hoops, it's the right place for it all. Joining one or a few of the sports clubs at RIT would open the door to many more opportunities to connect with new people and try something different.
Gene Polisseni Center
Hockey is the most popular sport at RIT. Going to a hockey game can be quite an experience – a way to ignite the spiRIT. The thrill of a game can be exciting, especially when in person! The way it brings together the community is refreshing.
If you enjoy ice skating, there are open skate times at the Gene Polisseni Center. Just be sure to bring your own pair of skates!
Events
My favorite part about the campus must be its liveliness. Every week is filled with events around campus organized by clubs and the university. Keeping up with the events calendar comes in handy.
Every event is an opportunity to make new friends and relax from all the assignments and due dates. Some of the friends I have today, I met at these events, such as the Global Union BBQ and the CAB Carnival during Fall Fest.
Closing Note
There is always so much more to the college experience that can make you grow in more ways than one. Trying new things and balancing your social and academic life can really evolve you. Take all the opportunities and create your own!
