Global Disability Futures

Course Description: This course explores Disability Studies in global context, centering perspectives of disabled people, scholars, designers, and activists worldwide. Taking a decolonial approach, we examine how disability is constructed differently across global settings, situating disability politics, identity, and design alongside critical perspectives on ableism. Integrating social scientific and humanistic approaches, we consider disability as a relational experience across diverse locations, including Russia, Japan, Australia, Turkey, Uganda, China, and the United States. Through futures thinking, we critique ableist assumptions embedded in technoscience, envision inclusive alternatives, and engage with crip temporalities to challenge normative ideas of progress. Drawing on ethnography, creative writing, critical theory, historical materials, films, and other media, we develop ethical frameworks for reimagining care and accessibility beyond the pathologizing practices of medical care and global public health.

Course Description: This is the first in a two-course sequence oriented to the solution of real world engineering design problems. This is a capstone learning experience that integrates engineering theory, principles, and processes within a collaborative environment. Multidisciplinary student teams follow a systems engineering design process, which includes assessing customer needs, developing engineering specifications, generating and evaluating concepts, choosing an approach, developing the details of the design, and implementing the design to the extent feasible, for example by building and testing a prototype or implementing a chosen set of improvements to a process. This first course focuses primarily on defining the problem and developing the design, but may include elements of build/ implementation. The second course may include elements of design, but focuses on build/implementation and communicating information about the final design.

Course Description: For the MS in Product Development (MPD) program. Students in the program must demonstrate intellectual leadership in the field of new product development. The general intent of the Capstone is to demonstrate knowledge of the integrative aspects of new product development in the context of a company-oriented problem solving project. The project should address issues of significance to multiple functions or disciplines and should draw upon skills and knowledge acquired from various courses and experiences in the program Team-based projects are encouraged. Course Description: A presentation of the fundamental concepts and theories used in organizing and structuring data. Coverage includes the data modeling process, basic relational model, normalization theory, relational algebra, and mapping a data model into a database schema. Structured Query Language is used to illustrate the translation of a data model to physical data organization. Modeling and programming assignments will be required. Note: students should have one course in object-oriented programming.

Course Description: This course builds on the basics of web page development that are presented in Web and Mobile I and extends that knowledge to focus on theories, issues, and technologies related to the design and development of web sites. An overview of web design concepts, including usability, accessibility, information architecture, and graphic design in the context of the web will be covered. Introduction to web site technologies, including HTTP, web client and server programming, and dynamic page generation from a database also will be explored. Development exercises are required.

Course Description: The user experience is an important design element in the development of interactive systems. This course presents the foundations of user-centered design principles within the context of human-computer interaction (HCI). Students will explore and practice HCI methods that span the development lifecycle from requirements analysis and creating the product/service vision through system prototyping and usability testing. Course Description: Students will survey and apply contemporary techniques used in analyzing and modeling information requirements. Requirements will be elicited in a variety of domains and abstracted at conceptual, logical, and physical levels of detail. Process, data, and state modeling will be applied in projects that follow a systems development lifecycle. Course Description: This course provides students with exposure to foundational concepts and technologies for non-relational data management. Topics include an overview of data types, structuring and processing data and knowledge, data transformation, and data storage. Course Description: This course introduces students to Visual Analytics, or the science of analytical reasoning facilitated by interactive visual interfaces. Course lectures, reading assignments, and practical lab experiences will cover a mix of theoretical and technical Visual Analytics topics. Topics include analytical reasoning, human cognition and perception of visual information, visual representation and interaction technologies, data representation and transformation, production, presentation, and dissemination of analytic process results, and Visual Analytic case studies and applications. Furthermore, students will learn relevant Visual Analytics research trends such as Space, Time, and Multivariate Analytics and Extreme Scale Visual Analytics.
