NTID is partnering with Rochester Museum & Science Center for Deaf Night on April 12 at RMSC. The event will provide an accessible and friendly experience for deaf and hard-of-hearing people in the community.

When RIT students Julia LaMarra and Celina Alvarado heard about a trip to work on repairing hospital equipment in Guatemala during this past winter break, they jumped at the chance.

For years, Joseph Hill, assistant dean of NTID Faculty Recruitment and Retention and an associate professor in the Department of ASL and Interpreting Education, has studied how the segregation of southern Black Deaf Americans, along with their history and culture, has impacted the linguistics of today’s Black Deaf youth. Hill hopes his research will continue to uncover and preserve Black American Sign Language.

Eight first-year RIT students have been selected to become the university’s first Disability Leadership Scholars to advocate and to educate about disabilities.

Monroe County’s Seneca Park Zoo, RIT’s National Technical Institute for the Deaf, and Rochester School for the Deaf will hold the first Deaf Culture Awareness Day at Seneca Park Zoo this Saturday, Sept. 17, rain or shine.

NTID and The Strong have partnered to celebrate Deaf Awareness Month. On Sunday, March 20, students from NTID’s Department of American Sign Language and Interpreting Education will provide ASL assistance at the museum’s admissions desk and its Skyline Climb high adventure course. And ASL tours of the Dancing Wings Butterfly Garden will take place every hour from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

RIT’s ASL-English interpretation program has achieved accreditation through the Commission on Collegiate Interpreter Education and now is one of only 16 accredited bachelor’s degree interpreting programs in the United States.
