Matt Hartensveld named as a SEMICON West 20 Under 30 future microelectronics industry leader
From building a cleanroom in his family home while he was in high school to becoming an entrepreneur and Ph.D., it is no wonder that RIT alumnus Matt Hartensveld is viewed as a future leader in the microelectronics industry. He was recently named SEMICON West 20 under 30 awardee, given by the organization to recognize the microelectronic industry’s brightest young leaders.

Bruce Smith retires as director of RIT’s microsystems engineering doctoral program
Professor Bruce Smith has made a career of innovations in nanolithography—the process of etching complex patterns on semiconductors—and in preparing a long line of graduates for work in organizations around the globe. Celebrating 35 years as a faculty member, his retirement from RIT’s Kate Gleason College of Engineering is a significant milestone that comes after many years of collaborating with leading semiconductor groups around the world.

Game design course immerses students in Japanese video game industry
There was an extra two weeks of class for some RIT students who ended their semester with a trip to Japan. The trip was the culmination of a Japanese Game Industry course last spring, where students learned about the world’s third largest video game market.

Latest round of donors pushes Sentinel Society past 500 members
Alumnus John Dahms ’71 remembers the photo scavenger hunt of 1970, where he and a team of other photo science students were tasked with uncovering the identity of an unmarked roll of color movie film and which film processing chemistry to use. Unforgettable learning experiences like that have been the driving force behind Dahms’ desire to give back to RIT.

RIT receives U.S. State Department grant to increase diversity in study abroad opportunities
RIT is one of 34 U.S. colleges and universities to be awarded a grant from the U.S. Department of State’s Increase and Diversify Education Abroad for U.S. Students (IDEAS) Program. RIT received $35,000 for its initiative European Deaf Culture: A Pilot Program in Community Engaged Learning.

Graduate students in RIT’s health systems management program are learning this week about how the industry works in Sweden from health care administrators and practitioners. The eight-day study-abroad course, Health Systems Analysis and Innovation, gives students insights into a different health care model and the nuanced reasons it works well for the Swedish culture.
